Geet Sethi crowned World Billiards Champion for the 8th Time!
Geet Sethi has capured his 8th world title with a 2073-1057 victory over Lee Lagan in a five hour final of the 2006 world professional billiards championship which concluded at Prestatyn on Friday evening. Building up an early lead with two century breaks Sethi led by 150 points for most of the first hour. From then on apart from a 118 and a 98 break by Lee Lagan, Sethi increased his lead to 427 at the end of the first session. Sethi continued his string of breaks, which included 2 double centuries. Lagan, who won the 2003 IBSF world championship with a 6-5 win over Sethi at Hyderabad, seemed to struggle throughout the match, with the exception of one century break in each session. When the final bell went, Sethi was in an unfinished break of 206, and without doubt, was a worthy champion, his 5th World Professional title which added to his 3 IBSF world titles takes his world titles tally to 8. Sethi, who has been focussing on the sport with renewed enthusiasm in preperation for the forthcoming Asian Games at Doha seems to be peaking at the right time. The Ahmedabad cueists last world professional title was in 1998 at his hometown and his IBSF world title in 2001 in New Zealand. Sethi defeated Chris Shutt, the defending champion in the semi final and David Casuier in the quarter final.
